Booklist Reviews 2009 November #2

What does the librarian do with the young adult who "never reads"? What about the girl who won't read anything but vampire stories—and you've run out of new titles? That alternative kid who feels that there are no books addressing his unique state? This handy volume provides, if not the answer, at least a starting place. Introductory chapters provide background on YALSA and its recommended-reading lists as well as tips on young adult services. The meat of the volume lies in the fifth and sixth chapters, which are lengthy annotated bibliographies of both nonfiction and fiction titles appearing on either the "Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers" or "Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults" list between 1999 and 2008. The selections range from the classic to the immediately contemporary and are guaranteed to appeal to a broad range of young adults. The lists are in alphabetical order by author, but the theme-oriented book lists in chapter 7 (some of which are available online) give a useful subject classification. Essential for youth services librarians. Copyright 2009 Booklist Reviews.
